Who We Are
This farm is truly a family endeavor! mel jeff ech seated
Jeff Carpenter has farming in his blood. Descending from generations of Vermont dairy farmers, Jeff deepened his love and understanding of plants through an apprenticeship with Rosemary Gladstar (year) and as the co-owner of Sage Mountain Herb Products. Since those early days, Jeff’s work as a farmer, consultant, educator and researcher has focused on the cultivation and propagation of medicinal herbs.  Jeff has recently entered into partnership with Rosemary Gladstar to host the International Herb Symposium. His passion for the green world is evident in all that he does as he spends his days working in the fields and in the community.

Melanie Slick-Carpenter grew up at Sage Mountain under the loving tutelage of herbalist Rosemary Gladstar. It was there that Melanie started her first business, Sage Mountain Herb Products. Over the last 20 years she has continued her work as a farmer, mother, community herbalist and middle school principal. Lily with Lily

Lily Carpenter is following in her mom and dad’s footsteps. Playing in the woods, and tending to the plants, Lily is an avid little farm girl. Our little sprite reminds us how much wonder there is in this beautiful world if we slow down and take time to play.

Our crew
Brian Hoogervorst
has been working for us literally since day one and continues to amaze us with his work ethic, attitude, stamina, and skills.  Josie Green joined us last year and has gifted us with her incredible skills. She not only runs our office but is knowledgeable about the plants and contributes to all aspects of our operation.  Karen Lentke and George Kiely are truly outstanding in the field.  Providing valuable support when we need extra hands, their versatility as well as their sense of humor are invaluable assets to our farm.
Thank you to all of our interns both past and present and to our friends and family who have all donated countless hours of “sweat equity”.

Who is Zack Woods? Zack Woods is not a person but rather a place.  Zack Woods Pond is a pristine, undeveloped local landmark a couple miles (as the crow flies) from our farm.  Jeff spent time there as child, canoeing and fishing with his grandfather.

Zack Woods Consulting   In the last 5 years, Jeff has worked with several landowners, farmers, and potential business owners sharing his knowledge of agriculture and land management.  With 20 years of experience owning and operating plant-based businesses, Jeff offers consulting services that focus on earth stewardship, sustainability and profitability.RGladstar Herb Class 05 070

Jeff is currently working as a consultant for a medicinal herb farm and natural health care product business located on a 1500 acre farm in southern Vermont.  He developed an initial business plan that helped the owners secure a start-up loan from the Vermont Economic Development Authority.  He continues to consult on all aspects of this farm including personnel management, crop production, facility design, and product manufacturing.
